Want to know if your vehicle can fit most Double DIN video or CD players using a kit? The Scosche chart will show you which kit you will receive FREE with purchase of a compatible in-dash unit. Not all vehicles require a kit, and may only use the factory mounting brackets to replace the factory Double DIN unit. Please note that factory mounting depth needs to be factored into the installation of any unit, along with the outer mounting area of the Double DIN dash opening compared to the units.
In Dash Car Stereo Information:
To use an analogy, a car stereo (also called a head-unit or a receiver) is the “brain” of the car audio operation, allowing the user to control the sound output and adjust it as they see fit. After market stereos provide superior options and more features than factory head units. They also have a much flashier design including animated displays and customizable color schemes. The sound output is louder and cleaner from after-market car head units, and most have enhanced security features to prevent your head unit from being stolen. For the ultimate security features, look for head units with detachable face plates and stealth modes.
Aftermarket in dash car stereos usually come standard with controls for your AM/FM tuner and also have CD, MP3, WMA, and AAC playback capability. They also include standard controls for volume, balance, tone, fader, and source selection. Unlike factory radios, after-market head units have special skip protection, built-in crossovers and equalizers, and even Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound decoding. The top of line car receivers include features such as DVD playback, satellite radio controls, digital HD Radio, internal hard drives, Bluetooth capability, GPS navigation, and inputs for iPod and USB use.

Our in-dash GPS Navigation systems are installed right into your vehicle’s dashboard. They include a built-in CD player, AM/FM tuner and some even offer video (DVD) playback too. They also feature A/V inputs and outputs and an antenna for picking up the GPS signal. Your navigation system uses this antenna to pick up signals from Global Positioning Satellites. The monitors feature touchscreen controls and a digital keyboard display, making it easy to type in destinations. Most systems include points of interest that are preloaded on your system’s memory. These points of interest are especially helpful when traveling in uncharted territory, giving you directions to gas stations, airports, restaurants, hotels, and other useful locations. Some car GPS receivers are now fashioned with Bluetooth technology to allow you to make hands-free phone calls.
Many of our car stereos offer connectivity with iPods, USBs, and SD Cards for MP3 playback. This means you can play the music on your portable media player through your car receiver, controlling it all through your car radio. Just simply plug your portable music player into the stereo. Some car head units require plug adapters to do this, and in a limited number of older models you can only control the music through the portable player. You can also install a FM modulator so you can listen to your portable media players via a radio frequency. Car stereos that are geared with the latest Bluetooth technology enable you to play music wirelessly from your laptop, cell phone or other digital media players. Certain car stereos even offer a built-in hard drive for storing your entire music library.
Don’t overlook the cutting edge technology of HD radio and Satellite radio. HD radio allows you to receive a clearer AM/FM signal, even when traveling in the most obscure locations. Similarly, satellite radio offers clear broadcasting signals almost anywhere as well as commercial-free channels with premium content. To use a satellite radio tuner, you need a satellite radio-ready car stereo, an antenna, and a subscription. Simply mount the unit underneath your seat and connect the car stereo to the antenna to begin your satellite radio experience. Satellite radio units that operate with navigation compatible stereos offer live traffic data for an additional monthly fee. This data briefs you on the average speed of traffic in your selected areas and helps you avoid traffic jams.
Most car stereos include options for further expansion possibilities. You can use your car stereo’s auxiliary inputs and audio/video outputs to connect portable media players, TV monitors, amplifiers, and subwoofers.

You’re not likely to miss a single note because the system has a range of 20 to 20,000 Hz — beyond the hearing range of some people. The 8GB hard drive is a little conspicuous in its light capacity, though we envision few LS owners will complain. In any case, it’s a minor gripe against what’s still an exceptional audio system.

Since B&W speakers are the reference-quality choice of serious audiophiles, and even recording studios, you’d best not waste them on any old soundtrack. Cadillac has gone from being the punching bag of the luxury car industry to a force that’s reclaiming a healthy share of its former glory. This is due, in no small part, to the revamped CTS model. There are highlights everywhere you look, but for our purposes we’ll concentrate on the Bose 5.1 Cabin Surround Sound System. Its 10 speakers may come up short of other systems in quantity, but don’t equate that to the quality. Unlike some Bose-labeled factory systems that have disappointed, this is worthy of the name, delivering the accurate fullness and range associated with the brand. It matches nicely with the diverse collection of well-mastered tracks on Synchronicity from The Police, which will barely put a dent in the 40GB hard drive onboard.

It doesn’t have a universally known manufacturer’s named attached, but the Volvo S80 features a setup built in collaboration with Danish firm Dynaudio for an impressive package of 12 speakers — each with its own filter — and 650 Watts (truth be told, they did work with Dolby Laboratories to fine tune the surround sound). You can’t help but be impressed by the reproduction, regardless of where you’re sitting. One thing that kept this system from a higher rank was its lack of intuitive operation. It’s an improvement over past systems, but still uncharacteristically complicated. To bring simplicity back to it all, we paired this system with a greatest-hits package from ABBA. Just be thankful we showed mercy and avoided Ace of Base as the soundtrack of choice.

The theater experience in the Lincoln MKX crossover is based on more than just the rear-seat DVD player. The optional THX II Certified Audio System is the best auto-based representation we’ve heard of inventor Tomlinson Holman’s standard. Whereas the first Lincoln-based edition could get a bit mired in bass, the MKX package is cleaner. It now handles bass as efficiently as other ranges and requires little to no fiddling to get it right; it’s why the 14-speaker, 600 Watt system is best experienced with a soundtrack like Kanye West’s Graduation.

Foo Fighters, Mitsubishi’s Lancer and Rockford Fosgate have each been dismissed as being more exuberant performers than precision players in their respective fields. However, this is not true, especially in this setup. The 650 Watt, nine-speaker system includes an enclosed 10-inch subwoofer in the trunk and is surprisingly adept at handling crisp highs without sounding hollow. Unlike some other factory systems, the speed-sensitive volume and equalization work very well also.

Chrysler recognizes the broad appeal of the 300C and wisely offers systems to satisfy multiple generations. If you’re more inclined to drive the mild-mannered 300C editions, you’re more likely to appreciate the optional Boston Acoustics package. Rarely do 368 Watts, seven speakers and a subwoofer produce such full sound. It’s a great system to explore the similar attention to detail demonstrated on Steely Dan’s Aja. If you don’t roll that way, but still like the car, go for the hotter 300C SRT8. Then you can play Chris Brown’s Exclusive on a system made to handle the lows: the 13-speaker, 322-Watt Kicker surround sound system with a 100-Watt sub-woofer.

Some sports car purists insist a Ferrari’s sound system begins and ends with its engine. Ferrari has even hidden audio systems behind retractable covers in some cars. The 612 Scaglietti is less sports car and more really fast 2+2 GT, so even the Marathoner faithful shouldn’t be too upset with the addition of the Bose Media System. It may not be pretty, but it does centralize the infotainment features and was developed with the car’s interior in mind. Because they were born in the same area and will forever be known for the notes they hit, it’s only right to enjoy this car and system with Pavarotti’s final work.
